About the cruise
Ammouliani is the only inhabited island in all of Halkidiki, sitting in the gulf between the Sithonia and Athos peninsulas. The cruise from Vourvourou takes about an hour and gives you the rare combination of a real island visit and a swim-stop trip — you can land in the small fishing harbour, walk the village, eat at a traditional taverna, then swim at one of the island's beaches before heading back.
The island is small enough to feel relaxed (around 500 permanent residents) but big enough to have several beaches worth visiting. Alikes on the south coast has fine sand and shallow water, perfect for kids. Karagatsia on the east side is more dramatic with golden sand and views toward Mount Athos. Megali Ammos is a long stretch with shaded pine groves behind.
The village itself is a working fishing community. Boats unload the morning catch around 11am, and several tavernas on the waterfront serve it straight from the sea — grilled fish, octopus, fried calamari, and chilled tsipouro. Lunch at a taverna on the harbour is the traditional way to spend the middle of the day on Ammouliani.
This cruise is best as a full-day trip — there is too much to do in a half-day slot. Mornings are calm and good for swimming; afternoons bring a breeze and are good for sailing back with the wind behind you.
